What happens when I arrive in China?
When arriving in Shanghai, you can expect to be met at the airport and taken to the teachers’ apartments at the Sino-Canada High School campus. You will be picked up at the Pudong Airport by one of the drivers from the school or by the school administration. As much as possible there will be someone who speaks English to meet you. If you are a new teacher a member of the administration will come to the airport to greet you. After you check through customs and get your baggage you should wait there at the exit into the main unsecured area of the Airport where you will be met by one of the staff. (In case there is some emergency and a member of the staff have not arrived - to your left - about 100 metres away is a Burger King - please wait there). You and your luggage will then be loaded into a school vehicle, and depending on how you feel we will either stop in Shanghai for supper or proceed on to school.
You will be taken to your apartment and shown where you will be living. Water for drinking will be delivered and a brief explanation on using your appliances will be given (printed instructions are all in Chinese)
At Sino-Canada you will be given a four-day orientation. One day will be spent on local tours and shopping. Half day will be spent on developing course overviews (IRPS). Additionally there will be a half-day on procedures to become familiar with the school and teaching requirements. You will be given a general understanding of the school year and teacher/student expectations. The final day of the orientation will be set aside for teachers’ preparation. For interested staff a tour of either Shanghai or Suzhou will take place on the first weekend.
