If I don’t talk Chinese how will I be understood?

Generally speaking, any hotel three stars and greater, travel agencies, major airports and train stations all have people that can speak English. Shopkeepers and restaurants in major tourist areas will have enough English to help you get by. Sign language is universal and being understood is not usually a problem when accompanied by a smile.
